Bismarck is riding the momentum. As North Dakota’s running and biking calendar blossoms this October, local businesses, health groups, and city officials say they’re already seeing signs of growth in tourism, community spirit, and wellness.
Across the state, more than 57 running races and over a dozen cycling events are planned this year, fueling interest in active travel and outdoor recreation.
One standout is the Maah Daah Hey Buck-Fifty Ultra, a 154-mile multi-discipline course open through October 31, drawing endurance athletes statewide.
Back home in Bismarck, the Monster Mile 5K (Oct. 11) continues to draw locals and visitors alike via Heartview Foundation’s annual event. Meanwhile, the Bismarck Marathon Weekend—held earlier this year—continues to leave its mark in local pride and economic ripple effects.
Across the region, cycling too is gaining attention. North Dakota’s mountain biking trails—like segments near Mandan, Jamestown, or along Lake Sakakawea—are being spotlighted as hidden gems.
“We saw a 15 % uptick in room bookings the weekend of our 5K,” says Amanda Ross, manager at a downtown Bismarck inn.
“When runners cheer each other across the finish line, everyone catches the buzz,” adds local coach Javier Hernandez.
