After Halloween, Bismarck residents are being encouraged to give their pumpkins a second life — by composting them instead of tossing them in the trash.
“It’s an easy way for families to help our environment,” said a Bismarck Public Works spokesperson. “One pumpkin may seem small, but thousands add up fast. Composting makes a difference.”
Local gardener Maria Hanson shared, “We save our pumpkins every year. They break down over winter and make amazing soil for spring planting.”
Tips for Residents
Remove paint, stickers, or decorations
Smash pumpkins into chunks for faster composting
Add leaves or yard clippings to balance compost
Never dump pumpkins in parks or natural areas — it can spread seeds and pests
