A striking new mural has been unveiled on the wall of Zimmerman’s Furniture Clearance Center at 201 E. Main Ave in Bismarck, celebrating the city’s heritage and local spirit.
The artwork was commissioned by Odney Advertising and painted by local artist Melissa Gordon, who drew inspiration from Bismarck’s roots and distinctive symbols.
The mural features representations such as Otto von Bismarck (depicted humorously enjoying a “Bismarck” donut), the city’s founding year, plus local flora, fauna, and a bear tribute to Theodore Roosevelt.
Zimmerman's is a longtime local business, operating in the community since 1964, with its Clearance Center located on Main Street.
Bismarck already has a tradition of public art — for example, the Bismarck Art Alley hosts rotating murals by local artists that highlight state identity.
This new piece adds to the city’s growing visual storytelling and downtown revitalization efforts.
“I wanted something bold and bright — when you drive Main Street, I want people to feel that sense of history and pride.” -Melissa Gordon (Artist)
As public art, it gives residents a sense of ownership of shared space and stirs conversations about local heritage.
This new mural isn’t just paint on brick — it’s Bismarck’s story on display. As it brightens Main Street every sunrise, it reminds residents and visitors alike: the past, present, and spirit of this city belong to all of us.
