Crews have begun demolishing the old Interstate 94 bridge near Exit 161 in Bismarck, prompting lane reductions and traffic detours from 8 a.m. to 6 a.m. daily. Drivers must exit at Exit 161 and reenter via on-ramps as part of the long-term project that began in spring 2024 and is expected to continue until summer 2026.

The I-94 bridge replacement project is one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in Bismarck in recent years. The bridge, which has served the region for decades, is being replaced due to aging conditions and safety concerns. According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), the $60 million project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and support long-term economic growth by modernizing a key transportation link.

For local commuters, the demolition marks the start of an extended period of adjustments. Morning and evening rush hours are expected to be the most challenging, especially for those traveling between Bismarck and Mandan. Businesses along the corridor anticipate slower customer traffic, while residents are preparing for longer commute times. The NDDOT has advised drivers to plan ahead, allow for delays, and use alternate routes when possible.

Area businesses are adapting too. Mike Hansen, owner of a restaurant near Exit 161, added: “We’re preparing for lighter traffic during peak construction, but we’re also hopeful that the new bridge will make access easier in the long run.”

Demolition will continue in phases throughout the fall and winter, with construction of the new bridge scheduled to ramp up in 2025. NDDOT officials say the project remains on schedule for completion by summer 2026. Until then, Bismarck drivers should expect continued lane reductions, ramp detours, and traffic pattern changes.
