Bismarck residents will soon spot bright new public notice signs on properties slated for potential development, giving neighbors earlier insight before hearings take place.
For years, notices of zoning or development hearings were primarily published in print or online. Now, the City of Bismarck is shifting toward a more visible approach. The new requirement ensures physical notice signs will be posted directly on properties ahead of development hearings. Officials say this move is designed to increase transparency and encourage more community participation in the decision-making process.
For Bismarck locals, this change means they won’t need to dig through city websites or legal ads to know when development could affect their neighborhood. Whether it’s a new apartment complex, commercial project, or rezoning request, residents will see signs posted on site—making it easier to stay informed and voice opinions at public hearings.
“Placing physical signs is about accessibility,” said a Bismarck city planner. “It helps residents who may not follow online updates stay aware of projects in their own backyard.”
Local homeowner James Larson said, “I think it’s great. Too often we don’t hear about a new development until construction begins. Now we’ll know ahead of time and can prepare our input.”
The program rolls out this fall, with the first signs expected to appear before upcoming October hearings. Residents are encouraged to attend hearings or submit comments online. By making development more visible—literally—the city hopes to foster stronger community dialogue and better planning outcomes.
